The Fourth Whore by Ev Knight is a graphic tale of the biblical apocalypse covered in grit and grunge. This is not your Sunday school story! Recently, I finished reading The Fourth Whore by Ev Knight and if I had to describe this book with one word it would be GRITTY. This was definitely not a novel that I would normally pick up at my local bookstore but I'm glad I read it all the same. This book gave off some serious SUPERNATURAL vibes but rated R. The biblical apocalypse storyline is definitely something I find entertaining. I'm not religious but I just connect with the characters well in these types of stories. I also think the author did an amazing job of setting the scene. You could almost say it was atmospheric in away. There were times I struggled with the dialogue and I found it difficult to invest in the story. Regardless of that, the book has lots of the things my horror-loving heart desires. This book truly has no boundaries. I really, really enjoy the biblical apocalypse type of tale. By no means have I read anything like Ev Knight's rendition before though. The author takes this age-old story from zero to a hundred, real fast. I'm in no way religious but I grew up with a general understanding of the bible. I think because of that the characters are so familiar and I connect with them easily. There's just something so entertaining about the pathetic human that rises up with the help of outside forces to overcome the odds and defeat the likes of Satan with all his power. Mix that with Ev Knight's whores and you got a party! I think the author did a fantastic job using her words to paint a picture of a grungy urban landscape. Easily, this was my favourite thing about the book. I felt filthy reading along as if I hadn't changed my clothes or washed my hair in a long time. It was all very vivid and kind of atmospheric. The gritty and grimy setting described in this book was horrific and will stay with me for a long time. Basically, I found my mind drifting from the story and the extreme content in the book was the only thing to reel me back in. I really enjoyed a lot of the dialogue and the narrative between Kenzi, Sariel and Satan but the whores were difficult. They are these deeply biblical characters so the narrative is written old testament style at times and I just found it tough to follow. The book was so explosive off the start with the first chapter but just fizzled out after that. The author struggles to hold the reader's attention without the sexual or gruesome scenes added here and there. The Fourth Whore by Ev Knight got 3 / 5 stars from me. This book is a horrific rendition of a biblical apocalypse story told by an author with a powerful voice. The vividly written scenery will provide an atmospheric experience for readers and although I had trouble following along at times, I was still thoroughly entertained. In my opinion, this is an impressive debut by Ev Knight and I look forward to reading her next novel. ANDREW FOWLOW THE HEART AND SOUL OF HORROR FICTION REVIEWSComments are closed.
