THE PATIENCE OF A DEAD MAN BY MICHAEL CLARK

10/6/2020
BOOK REVIEW THE PATIENCE OF A DEAD MAN BY MICHAEL CLARK
The Patience of a Dead Man is one hell of a ghost story. Michael Clark managed to keep me on the edge of my seat with a well-crafted mystery about a farmhouse in New Hampshire and the evil that plagues the land in which it sits. I really liked how gripping the story is. At first, I thought it was a good ol' fashioned ghost story but it definitely evolves as you work your way through with lots of tension and suspense. The book also kept a good pace. I rarely found myself waiting for something to happen. The malicious apparitions that haunt the visitors of this old farmhouse will keep you on your toes start-to-finish.

Tim Russell is a man looking to start over. After going through a drawn-out and costly divorce, he decides to go all or nothing. Tim's career as a contractor is going to come in handy for this next venture. He's done his research and knows exactly what he wants to do. He's going to flip a property to give his finances the jump start it desperately needs. After viewing a few properties he decides on THE house. Only, this house already has residents, the permanent and dangerous kind. Now, Tim will need to make a decision. Risk his life trying to expel these haunting menaces or face financial ruin.

One thing I need to mention about this book is that it is FULL of detail. At times I found myself getting a little lost in it all but Michael Clark added a bunch of reference material including maps, journal entries, and calendar drawings. It was a nice touch. All-in-all I thought this story is well put together and had a solid mystery. The extra detail and additional content helped build on that mystery making The Patience of a Dead Man a very gripping reading experience.

It kind of goes without saying that a story is going to evolve and change as you read it. Generally, a book isn't exactly as it seems. I went into this novel with the impression that it is a good ol' fashioned ghost story set in a haunted house. I WAS WRONG. I mean, there are ghosts and the house is certainly haunted. Just understand that you can expect more than that as you unfold what happened at the farmhouse during it's dark and wicked past. The previous owners have much to say and the undead lurk around every corner.

The book is just shy of four hundred pages but to my surprise, it reads quickly. I was very happy with the pace of the story. Don't get me wrong, the book had a few dull moments but mostly the menacing apparitions keep things interesting, to say the least. Between that and discovering clues that will hopefully assist in expelling the ghosts, readers will surely be as captivated as I was and I was definitely gripped by this tale.

The Patience of a Dead Man got a rating of 4 / 5 stars from me. Readers searching for a chilling ghost story, look no further. Michael Clark put everything he's got into this trilogy and it shows. There is a bunch of extra material that helps enhance the reading experience to an already tense and suspenseful tale. Be mindful of your surroundings and keep the lights on while you read this one, you never know who or what could be watching… waiting…
