There were parts of this story that really scared the crap out of me. The idea of being stuck in the woods and sleeping in a tent far, far away from civilization when you KNOW someone or something is out there… stalking you… hunting you. It's terrifying. The one thing I will say about Boy in the Box is that it is full to the brim with tension. There were times I felt it deep in my gut. That, as well as character development. They were well written and deeply flawed which made it easy to connect with. It's a slow-burn suspense story but I think it was a little too slow for me. I definitely felt there were parts that could have been cut. Aside from the length, this book did not disappoint me. I was thoroughly creeped out by this bleak and ominous tale. Wow, this is an incredibly tense story. The insurmountable pressure looming over the character's lives, the strain on their relationships, the stress of doing what they feel they must do to move on after the hunting accident that ruined everything. I felt all of it as the reader, it was deep down in my gut the entire time. The author knows how to drop the weight of the world on your shoulders and makes sure you know exactly what his cast of characters are going through while you read along. I really, really like the character development in this book. You get to know everything about them as the tension winds tighter and tighter. It's an excellent means of connecting to the story and Marc E. Fitch did a fantastic job of it. I found myself on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster as the story progresses. The protagonist especially got to me. Love, hate, empathy, admiration, hate again… I was all over the map and it made for a good reading experience. The book is a slow-burn bleak and ominous tale that is full of heart-pounding suspense. This is normally something I absolutely love in the horror genre. Although, in Boy in the Box it was maybe too slow. I thought the story could have been cut shorter. There were a couple of chapters that the author used to affirm the problems the characters face in their lives. It was as if the author wasn't confident that his readers could piece together the outlining issues that were certainly evident. I hate reading a novel with entire chapters that didn't contribute to the story. Maybe this book would have been more effective as a novella. I rated Boy in the Box by Marc E. Fitch 3 / 5 stars. The book is a slow-burn gothic tale full of heart-pounding suspense and tension that readers are sure to enjoy. I recommend this book for anyone looking to get lost in a story with a cast of characters that has the capability to emotionally drain your soul. I will definitely be on the lookout for more stories by Marc E. Fitch. ANDREW FOWLOW the heart and soul of horror fiction reviewsComments are closed.
