CHILDHOOD FEARS: IT WASN'T THE FIRST OR EVEN THE SECOND IT WAS THE THIRD THAT GOT ME BY  MONIQUE C. GUGGINO

CHILDHOOD FEARS: IT WASN'T THE FIRST OR EVEN THE SECOND IT WAS THE THIRD THAT GOT ME BY MONIQUE C. GUGGINO
Growing up in the 80’s, watching dark children movies of the time (Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, and Legend), not much scared me. I even watched Poltergeist and The Fly on a loop and never had a nightmare. It’s weird how some things don’t bother you and yet some things resonate and scar you for life. Surprisingly enough, the movie that traumatized me the most is Poltergeist 3.

In Poltergeist 3, instead of the ghost communicating through the television, he chooses mirrors. There is something creepy about looking at something familiar like your own reflection and thinking that something else is actually looking back. Your reflection is so life-like. It watches you as much you watch it. Wait! Did my reflection just blink out of sync? Until I was about 28, I did not sleep with a mirror facing my bed in fears that when I wake up in the middle of the night, my reflection would be sitting watching me.

Filmmaking allows me to write my fears and bring them to life. I look at my films like rollercoasters. You know you aren’t in any real danger but I hope that I get your palms sweaty and your heart pounding, with maybe a laugh or two. Like a rollercoaster, it’s all about having a good time. There is a fine line between fear and excitement.

I see the world differently than others, and if I do it right, I can show you what I see at night.
