VAMPYRES (2015)

Some people have all the luck, whenever I go out exploring the countryside all I ever encounter is a bunch of unwashed locals walking their pit bulls and loads of midges. What I would give to be picked up by a pair of bisexual vampire ladies intent of having their wicked way with me before feasting on my special ginger blood. Which, is exactly what happens in this remake of José Ramón Larraz’s 1974 cult erotic chiller Vampyres. In this lazy age of shoddy remakes and lazy sequels, one must wonder why the filmmakers decide on resurrecting this obscure but groundbreaking horror film. It certainly cannot be for the money, remakes of obscure films are never going to bring in the cash, ( and don't even think about screaming "what about The THING at me, this isn't in that league sadly), you can only assume that they made this film out of love for the original movie. Regarding storyline the remake pretty much follows the plot of the original with a few minor changes, the ending for one has been changed and fits in better with the tone and developments in the film than the original film. However, some small changes and a few larger changes rob the film of some of the magic that the original had. For example, the haunting beauty of the English landscape that played such an important role in the original film has been supplanted by a rather generic and lifeless Spanish one. And the inclusion of more sex scenes, which sadly are about as erotic and sensual as a video version of Readers Wives, runs the risk of stripping the film of any sense of seductive, sensual overtones to reveal a self-indulgent and unrefined attempt at soft-core porn. However, the film is, thanks to it sticking so closely to the source material still highly watchable, a solid cast makes the most of a workman-like direction and a guest appearance from the scream queen of scream queens Caroline Munroe is always a good thing in a movie. Vampyres may not have the power and the vision of the original film, but it does have a sense of heart at the centre of the film, and for that, it is worth checking out in the rental section of your nearest online video stockist. |
