THE HORROR OF MY LIFE: DANIELLA BATSHEVA

10/8/2022
HORROR FEATURE THE HORROR OF MY LIFE- DANIELLA BATSHEVA
Getting through it is an act of mental strength and you need to have a gnarly sense of humor to understand that Platt has no limits to trolling his readers. It was an honor to illustrate the cover for the re-release and it still feels a bit illegal.
THE FIRST HORROR BOOK I REMEMBER READING

Goosebumps Attack of the Jack O’ Lanterns. When I lived in Israel, I used to pick up my Goosebumps at an old bookstore and found a copy in Hebrew. Hardly scary by adult standards, but it was very spooky and fun at the time!

THE FIRST HORROR FILM I REMEMBER WATCHING

Beetlejuice is the first. I was about four years old and I would go around saying he was my husband in preschool. Everyone had valid concerns.

THE GREATEST HORROR BOOK OF ALL TIME

I’m going to say The Gas by Charles Michael Platt. Hear me out, it’s the very definition of horror, distilled. It’s disgusting, taboo, horrific, it has zero boundaries. One of the chapters described a very violent group sex act with a robot, flesh explosions and fecal matter, and I realized it was the first time that words on a page made me gag. I needed a break to compose myself. It was written in the 70’s and got the author arrested. Still holds up today. Getting through it is an act of mental strength and you need to have a gnarly sense of humor to understand that Platt has no limits to trolling his readers. It was an honor to illustrate the cover for the re-release and it still feels a bit illegal.

THE GREATEST HORROR FILM OF ALL TIME

This varies depending on my mood, but I default to Dolls. At least, to me, Dolls is the greatest horror film of all time. It’s got a fun, whimsical story, dolly monsters, colorful characters, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s extremely aesthetically pleasing.

THE GREATEST HORROR WRITER OF ALL TIME

I really enjoy the works of Clive Barker, especially the Books of Blood. I love that each story takes place in different locations worldwide, giving the reader a variety of interesting visuals and characters, with plots both supernatural and based in reality. For someone like me, with a shorter attention span, it keeps things interesting. The Yattering and Jack remains my favorite story from the collection. I love seeing the tables turn and the victim becoming the unexpected victor. Barker crafts interesting characters and has the flexibility to cover a wide range of topics and emotions in his works. The fact that he’s a great visual artist is also a huge bonus. My vote goes to Clive Barker!

THE BEST HORROR BOOK COVER OF ALL TIME

Tim Jacobus’ Goosebumps illustrations and Basil Gogos’ covers for Famous Monsters were my early favorites. I love seeing a monster painting with a bold, even bright, color palette that still has a lot of depth. While there’s a heavy application of color, the work never feels muddy or bogged down.

I feel guilty saying this because I would love to highlight an independent creator, but the Barnes and Noble release of Cthulhu Mythos Tales by Lovecraft is my favorite cover. It has the perfect blend of clean linework and classic monster imagery with a nod to illuminated manuscripts. They also pair it with unexpected colors, pops of gold embossing or spot UV, and a beautiful matte finish. Barnes and Noble has done an entire series of classic horror and sci-fi books, and they’re all so beautifully designed.

THE BEST HORROR FILM POSTER OFF ALL TIME

The poster for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari but the variant with the more elongated composition. Stylistically, I love how graphic and dramatic the characters are, and how bright the color palette is, while still maintaining an air of discomfort and eeriness. It’s not overworked or heavy handed and the clean shapes are beautiful. I love the suggestive environment and way the artist utilized the space in the composition. I’ve always enjoyed the stylizations in German Expressionism, but this poster is my favorite.

THE BEST PIECE OF ART I HAVE CREATED

This changes with my mood, or the weather, or the day. I never think about picking a favorite because I’m constantly growing and evolving. The best piece of art I’ve made might be different depending on who you ask! My current favorite is still my Pierrette, I think. I love a spooky mime paired with centuries-old medical diagrams. I go down the rabbit hole a lot into old medical practices and macabre history, so she’s the result of that. Might be different favorite next week!

THE WORST PIECE OF ART I HAVE CREATED

Will never see the light of day. I was working with a client who became a bit abusive about 8 years ago and kept berating me about getting the piece done while I had strep throat and a 102 fever. Younger me, having no self confidence or boundaries, allowed that behavior and micro-management. It was the ugliest thing I had ever made in my entire life. It wasn’t even mine. I wasn’t even allowed to stylistically be myself, he dictated every detail, and I painted. It was like trying to take my mind out of my mind and be someone I wasn’t. With a 102 fever! The piece itself was a really weird portrait of the person and the perspective didn’t make sense with the position of the body. The body, the outfit, the lighting - all looking like a patchwork of something that wasn’t meant to be! The whole thing was forced.

I’m very fortunate that my clients nowadays trust in my abilities and direction. Let that be a lesson to any new artists! No amount of money is worth disrespecting yourself!

THE MOST UNDERRATED HORROR FILM OF ALL TIME

How come nobody talks about Xtro? That film is such a wild ride! It gets crazy pretty early on with that weird alien impregnation scene and then the bizarre full-man-birth. The SFX artists on that film should’ve been given an award. I respect that it tackled a complicated family dynamic but didn’t take itself too seriously and still had gross squishy alien stuffs. I haven’t seen Bromley-Davenport’s other films, or the sequels, but this is a nice reminder to check it out.

THE MOST UNDERRATED HORROR BOOK OF ALL TIME

I’ll go with Blood Crazy by Charles Michael Platt. His works are like “white whales” to people and I can see why. This one really hit home because I spent much of my early years in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and it does the place justice, which is not exactly a compliment. This book had me feeling squeamish, gross, uncomfortable, and cackling uncontrollably, all within the first couple of chapters. Platt has done a couple readings of this book at horror conventions and the audience was always either horribly offended or laughing their asses off. I haven’t heard a lukewarm reaction to it, so far.

THE MOST UNDERRATED HORROR AUTHOR OF ALL TIME

I’ll say Charles Michael Platt. Homie went to jail for his writing in the 70’s. That’s something!

THE FILM THAT SCARED ME THE MOST

When I was little The Blob scared me. Not even the 80's remake, but the one from 1958 that had strawberry jam bursting through cardboard buildings. I have no idea why jam was so scary to me, but Chucky was aggressively fine?

THE PIECE OF ART I AM WORKING ON NEXT

Today, I’m working on some illustrations for a chapbook by an indie writer! His name is Michael Burke and I’m having a really fun time working with him because the descriptions of visuals in his pieces are stunning. It’s a short story is called Saturnalia and I could go on, but I don’t want to spoil it. It’s a futuristic-pagan-space story, which is interesting subject matter, to say the least.

Picture
I’ve been doing ongoing illustrations for alternative culture brand Kerrang! and with Trashville, a fresh entertainment and arts brand based in London. I’m fortunate to have many clients, so there’s always something being churned out! I don’t always know the exact date that my pieces will be published but I always share them to my socials, once they’re released!

Daniella Batsheva

Picture
Visual artist and lifelong horror fan, Daniella Batsheva, is a self-declared "illustrator with a design habit." Her aesthetic straddles the line between underground and mainstream. Her art boasts the beautiful detail-heavy, intricate linework of the Victorian era mixed with the dark goth imagery inspired by horror films. Softly stylized figures with deep color palettes. Whimsy with a creepy twist.

Daniella was named the first-ever female Lead Illustrator at Kerrang! - the UK alternative culture brand that has been around for 40+ years and reaches more than 45 million people a month. Her art for Kerrang! embraces a wide range of timely issues including mental health, sex, drugs and female empowerment.

Daniella shares, “Making art is very much a compulsion for me. I can't function without creating. Art provides a way that I sort my own thoughts and feelings, so it's something that is absolutely necessary for me. The selfish side of me creates so that I can share a timeline of my life experiences by sharing the things that I find to be most beautiful. The other side of me creates because I have always felt a lack of art and visual stimulation in my surroundings, so it is necessary to contribute towards helping to beautify the world.”

THE HORROR OF MY LIFE: DANIELLA BATSHEVA

IS THAT A VOICE OR MOTHER CALLING ME FOR DINNER? BY LOUISE WORTHINGTON

9/8/2022
FEATURE ARTICLE IS THAT A VOICE OR MOTHER CALLING ME FOR DINNER?
THE HORROR OF HUMANITY

Is that a voice or mother calling me for dinner? By Louise Worthington

Doctors might use the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM) classification system to diagnose mental health disorders, but how accurate can a diagnosis of an illness be that no one can see or touch?  Then there’s the complication of co-morbidity, the influence of one’s environment, genes and soon, the only clear thing is that accurately and unequivocally knowing what is going on inside someone’s head and why is a mystery.

Paul Tremblay in A Head Full of Ghosts portrays mental illness like nobody else. Aside from great writing and the realistic conjuring of a dysfunctional family with two daughters, he skilfully leaves the reader with more questions than answers at the end of the narrative. Fourteen-year-old Marjorie displays signs of acute schizophrenia. Or is it teenage attention-seeking? Has she been watching and reading too much horror? Is she possessed? Is her younger sister, Merry, the narrator, remembering and telling the events inaccurately? Is the eight-year-old hungry for attention and playing up to the game?

Then there’s the dad. He turns to the priest for an exorcism and invites a bunch of cameras into his home to televise it, ostensibly to pay for Marjorie’s medication and treatment and to keep the bank at bay from taking their home– but really – is that a sane thing to do?

It's a crazy world. That’s for sure.

Doctor Glass: A Psychological Thriller Novel
by Louise Worthington

DOCTOR GLASS: A PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER NOVEL BY LOUISE WORTHINGTON
THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW.

Psychotherapist Emma-Jane Glass has prioritized work over leisure for far too long. She does whatever it takes to help her clients, and it's bordering on professional obsession. When she publishes a controversial article about unstable mothers murdering their children, an anonymous letter arrives on her doorstep:

I will expose you.
Then, I will mutilate you…
Wait for me.

After she is abducted into the night, Doctor Glass finds herself at the mercy of a dangerous sociopath. But being a relentless doctor of the mind, she feels an urge to help her fragile captor, even if it might shatter her sanity—and her life. It becomes a game of survival, and only one mind can win.

For fans of deeply layered thrillers by Ruth Ware, Tana French, and Alex Michaelides comes the newest voice in psychological fiction.

CONTENT GUIDANCE:
This novel explores aspects of psychology and mental health and contains depictions of self-harm, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, and suicide. Please read with care.

13 Minutes of Horror 2022: SciFi Horror

6/8/2022
Picture
Nyx Horror Collective gears up for its second annual film festival, 13 Minutes of Horror 2022: SciFi Horror, due to stream on horror streaming giant Shudder August 13th through November 12th. 13 Minutes of Horror is a one-minute film challenge for women horror filmmakers, inclusive of BIWOC, LGBTQ+ women, disabled women, and non-binary creators.

In June, the collective partnered with Stowe Story Labs for its inaugural Nyx Horror Fellowship, offering a fellowship to woman-identifying horror writers, age 40 and over. This year’s recipient was vibrant filmmaker, Sandra Campbell.

Shudder, the streaming destination for all things horror and thriller, returns to host 13 Minutes, giving its filmmakers a chance to showcase brilliant indie horror on the platform, which has been invaluable to past and present winning filmmakers. Eunice Levis, last year’s Outstanding Selection, (for her film “Fell Ends”), shared her experience: “I joined a coven of creatives dedicated to elevating women in genre. Seeing my film on Shudder was so affirming and gave me a sense of community.” Levis was recently partnered with Netflix as part of NALIP Latino Lens, a narrative short film incubator for Women of Color.

“We’re so happy that our passionate idea helped someone create more traction in their career, it’s overwhelming in the best ways,” co-producer Mo Moshaty explains. Co-producer Kelly Krause added, “Hearing the reaction to 13 Minutes from our filmmakers and how this festival been a dream come true for them has been beyond rewarding for our team and exceeded our expectations.”

“We are so thankful to our amazing judges this year: horror writer Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep), writer/producer Liz Phang (Yellowjackets), writer Kim Garland (SyFy's Chucky) and Jonathan Barkan (Head of Acquisition at Mutiny Pictures),” said co-producer Melody Cooper. “All four are extremely supportive of our initiative as well as our core team's upcoming horror projects."

This year’s film festival is produced by Melody Cooper, Kelly Krause, Lisa Kröger, and Mo Moshaty.

UNQUIET SPIRITS ESSAYS BY ASIAN WOMEN IN HORROR

2/8/2022
UNQUIET SPIRITS ESSAYS BY ASIAN WOMEN IN HORROR
UNQUIET SPIRITS Essays by Asian Women in Horror, Edited by multi-Bram Stoker Award®-winning author Lee Murray and Stoker®-winner Angela Yuriko Smith, and includes a foreword by Stoker®-winner Lisa Kröger
The third in Murray and Smith’s Bram Stoker Award®-winning series on Asian women in horror, which includes the poetry collection Tortured Willows and fiction short story collection Black Cranes.

From hungry ghosts, vampiric babies, and shapeshifting fox spirits to the avenging White Lady of urban legend. . .

For generations, Asian women’s roles have been shaped and defined through myth and story. In Unquiet Spirits, Asian writers of horror reflect on the impact of superstition, spirits, and the supernatural in this unique collection of personal essays exploring themes of otherness, identity, expectation, duty, and loss, and leading, ultimately, to understanding and empowerment.

These women share what it is like to live with unquiet spirits--ghosts, demons, witches and vampires--common to the Asian experience. Articulate, they catalogue pain, humiliation, denial, and hunger through a supernatural lens, proving that the spirit world is a mirror image of our own - the horror is on both sides of the veil.
Check out these exclusive extracts from Unquiet Spirits
“…you don’t need a whole lot of ritual to access the spirit world in Indonesia. I always tell people that you can feel it as soon as you step off the plane, though that’s probably the humidity: the spirit world has constant access to you. Which isn’t to say that spirits have nothing better to do than bother you, but humans are meddling in those waters, too. Spiritual energy can make you sick, cause you misfortune, steal your money, steal your spouse, steal your kid. It crashes planes and starts earthquakes and determines trial outcomes. It’s the country’s biggest, richest black market, and you’re really better off not messing with it if you’re not a spiritual elder of some kind.”-- Nadia Bulkin, from her essay “Becoming Ungovernable: Latah, Amok, and Disorder in Indonesia”

“Hungry ghosts—like most ghosts—are generally invisible. Their suffering is unseen. They may be moving among us right now, begging for food from us, unheard (Gaki Zoshi, 12th cent).

“What happens when hunger is unrecognized by others? What happens when it’s unacknowledged even by the one possessing it? How long can you suppress your hunger? How long can you push it down, squelch it down, keep it down, and deny it?”-- Vanessa Fogg, from her essay “Hungry Ghosts in America”

“Identity can be a brutal thing, and, for me, oddly correlates to Korean stories of the fox spirit, kumiho. The fox spirit appears across many Asian mythologies, most known are the huli-jing of Chinese lore, or the kitsune of Japanese mythos. In each, the stories describe a shapeshifting fox who usually transforms into a beautiful woman. But the goals of the spirit vary, at times sinister and others benevolent. However, in Korean mythologies the kumiho embodies a particular and consistent malevolent edge. Dark and bloody, the original kumiho is a thing of nightmares, a sinister being, almost always female, who feeds upon human flesh.”-- K.P. Kulski, from her essay “100 Livers”

“I learned about demons before I learned about angels, and of preta—hungry ghosts—before I heard of buddhas or bodhisattvas. One childhood summer my sister brought home from Taiwan our dead uncle’s demon, the demon he inherited from Grandpa. Maybe it was my fault. Over the years I’ve gotten creative with how I convince myself it wasn’t.”-- Benebell Wen, from her essay “Ghost Month in Taiwan”:

“For countless generations, women have been consumed over and over in the service of men and society. They have been uprooted and planted in new soil.”— Doungjai Gam, from her essay” tethered chokeholds”

“…it is usually women who haunt the home, passively hidden in the shadowy closets and abandoned attics of a house, silent and present, as if waiting for another person to simply listen to them, to allow them the grace to be at peace. Ghosts are never about what the spirit had done while she was alive; it is always about what was done to her while she was alive, and how that violence, that injustice, tethers her to the world of the living, even though she is already dead.”

“In this banquet of pain, this feast of silenced voices and pieces of ourselves, I bring the roaming head of a nukekubi as my dish. This is what happens when we are no longer passive, when we let ourselves escape our bodies for a few moments and become us.”— Angela Yuriko Smith, from her essay “Tearing Ourselves Apart: The Nukekubi”
