The astute amongst you will have noticed that I haven't got round to reviewing the final instalment of Gary's excellent Concrete Grove trilogy. The reason for this is a simple one, I just can't bring myself to draw a line under what is in my opinion the best horror series published in the last 10 years. So until I can come to terms with the fact that this series has ended we'll not mention that elephant in the room. Which brings us to Nightsiders, which is Gary's début publication with the purveyors of top class horror, Darkfuse. THE VENUS COMPLEX BY BARBIE WILDE

A man rises out of an abyss of frustration and rage and creates works of art out of destruction, goddesses out of mere dental hygienists and beauty out of death. It’s also about the sickness and obsession that is LOVE. Enter into Michael’s world through the pages of his personal journal, where every diseased thought, disturbing dream, politically incorrect rant and sexually explicit murder highlights his journey from zero to psycho. I'm sure everyone who reads this blog knows who Barbie is is, if you don't then you should hang your head in shame. Not content with being a cinematic icon of the horror genre, Barbie has also shown that she has a great gift when it comes to writing horror. Her stories in The Mammoth Book of Body Horror, and Phobophobia, were among the stand out stories of those collections. Both of these stories gave the reader the chance to get a little peek through the curtains of Barbie's mind, The Venus Complex throughs back the curtains and allows the reader a full blown look into the dark, twisted, ans sensual mind of highly talented writer. You can never go back… not that Ray Johnson wants to. But when his mother passes away, he’s forced to return to get the family home ready for sale. Once there, he finds memories – some good, some bad – but something else: strange noises, in particular an odd creaking sound; strange phenomena he can’t explain; things he must face before he can move on. Things he must face in order to survive… Clockwork Dolls by William Meikle

Does all human passion, all memory, all imagination come merely from the chemistry in our brains, like the movements of a clock follow from the arrangement of its cogs and wheels? Are we just clockwork dolls? Or is there an organizing principle at work, something we can ask for answers to the important questions of existence... something that might answer? Dave Burns has asked. Now he, and his friends, might not live long enough to understand the reply. The Hoard by Alan Ryker

A new breed…a new evil… Hidden deep beneath its landfill lair of trash and filth, a strange new organism has come to life. When an accidental fire drives it out, the mysterious creature escapes across the drought-blasted Kansas prairie and finds the home of elderly hoarder Anna Grish. In desperate need of shelter, it burrows in, concealed amidst the squalor and mess. When Adult Protective Services force Anna to vacate her junk-riddled home, she moves in with her son and his family. But there is something wrong with Anna, something more than her declining mental condition and severe hoarding disorder. Something sinister has taken hold of her, and it’s not only getting stronger, it’s spreading. Amidst the wide-open Kansas plains, with endless blue sky above and flat, open vista stretching from one horizon to the next, there is nowhere to hide from…THE HOARD. Black Static Issue 33

There are not many things outside of my family that constantly bring a smile to my face. One of these rare things is the now identifiable sound of the latest issue of Black Static Magazine dropping through my letterbox every two months. |
