One of these days i will stick to my guns and never read another zombie book.  As a genre it's one that I am bored to death with.  However when an author as good Peter Mark May publishes a zombie book I have to sit up and pay attention.  Read on to think what i think of the book....

Conjure House By Gary Fry

Gary Fry is one of those people who seems to be able to make my bank balance decline at a very steady rate.  not content with being an author of exceptional talent, he also runs the rather excellent Gray Friar Press.    Conjure House is Gary's third novel, and the first to be published by the always reliable Darkfuse Press. Not to put any pressure on Gary, but this book has both the the reputation of Gary and Darkfuse to uphold.

EVERETT SMILES BY NEIL JOHN BUCHANAN

I have a lot of problems and difficulties, I'm sure those who read these reviews and follow me on Social Networks are well aware of many of these problems.  One of my biggest problems is listening to people talk. Mind just starts to wander after a few minutes.  I think this is reason why i have never listened to an audiobook before.  The thought of spending hours listening to someone else talk just didn't appeal to me.  So why I agreed to review this audiobook in the first place escapes me.  But was it it worth it, did it change my thoughts on audiobooks?  You will have to read on to find out.

HIGH MOOR 2 : MOONSTRUCK BY GRAEME REYNOLDS

In this era of horror where the tide of rotting zombies, and sparkly vampires is in danger of drowning the genre, it is always a joy when a author bucks the trend and producers a book that features one of horrors lesser used monsters.

Those of you who are long term readers of this blog, will know that I was blown away by the first volume of this series.  High Moor was an adrenalin shot straight into the heart of of horror.  An explosive thrill of a ride that brought a big grin to my face.

THE THEATRE OF CURIOUS ACTS BY CATE GARDNER

4/7/2013
Picture
Daniel Cole wants the world to end.

Returned home from the Great War, his parents and brother in their graves, Daniel walks a ghost world. When players in a theatre show lure Daniel and his friends, fellow soldiers, into a surreal otherworld they find themselves trapped on an apocalyptic path. A pirate ship waits to ferry some of them to the end of the world, helmed by Death.

Already broken by war, these men are now the world’s only hope in the greatest battle of all

There are times I love running this blog, and there are times I hate doing it, and there are times that I love and hate running this blog.

This is one of these love hate moments.  If it wasn't for this blog I would probably would never have been introduce to the wonderfully brilliant writing of Cate, and for that I am eternally grateful   However, if it wasn't for this blog I wouldn't have spent the last two weeks agonizing over doing a review that does this novella justice.  It's at times like these I wished I had tried harder at school.  So I have come to the decision to keep the review small and simple.  If you want a more in depth review then read click on the links below to much more in depth reviews, where the authors are way more gifted at getting their thoughts across than I am.

This book is amazing, Cate's writing is intelligent, lyrical, emotional. evocative and totally  engaging.  Theatre reads like an ephemeral Clive Barker.  TOCA, invokes many of the same emotions of wonder and awe that Barker's Weaveworld invoked all those years ago.

This a book that demands the readers attention, it is multi-layered, full of rich symbolism, and beautifully  described images.  However, the pay-off for the reader is more than worth every minute you invested in reading it.  TOCA, will linger in your thoughts for a long time, and you will be glad you had read it.

PHOBOPHOBIA EDITED BY DEAN M DRINKEL

4/7/2013

Hellraiser asked the Question "What's your pleasure?", well that would be telling.  Phobophobia an anthology of 27 short stories asks the questions "what's your fear?"  If you have been paying attention then you will all know what my main fears are.  Thankfully it doesn't look as though any nuns have made there way into this anthology.  However what  you do get  is an A-Z of fears, plus a bonus story from Steven Savile & Steve Lockley.

Edited by Dean M. Drinkel, Phobophobia certainly look like another first class production from the good folks over at Dark Continents Publishing.
