Sick B*stards is the story of Father, Mother, Brother and Sister, a family who are seemingly the last survivors of a nuclear war.  The family wakes up after the blast with no memory of each other or the situation leading up to their survival struggles. They don’t even remember their own names.

It’s hard to convey just how disgusting and disturbing this novel is, without giving away any spoilers.  As this little family struggles to survive, they must perform deplorable acts and at least one member of the family lives with the disgust that comes with what they have to do, at least for a while.

I first read Sick B*stards when it first came out back in 2013 and even then, it turned my stomach. I followed it up with more of Matt’s black cover books and spent much of 2014 hunched over the toilet, puking up my latest meal. (Just kidding.) Then, I moved on to other books, bouncing back and forth between many of my favourite authors, of which Matt is at the top of the list.

When I heard Sick B*stards was coming out as an audiobook, and that Chris Barnes was doing the narration, I think I squealed a little. (Or a lot.) Having fallen in love with his performance in the High Moor books, I couldn’t wait to see what he could bring to Sick B*stards.

I firmly believe that the narrator is only as good as the material he or she has to work with. However, a good narrator can make the listener experience so much more emotion than reading a book on his or her own. I got lost in Sick B*stards on more than one occasion thanks to Chris’s brilliant narration. Barnes perfectly captured the inner struggle some of the members of this family dealt with and brought a new twist to some of the more disturbing scenes. After listening to this book, I had to swear off meat for a while, especially fillet steaks. I used to love fillet steaks.

Allow me to take a moment to issue a strong warning. This book contains very graphic scenes. It has cannibalism, sex, and foul language, among other things. It is not for the faint of heart and if you are easily offended, Sick B*stards is not the book for you. However, if you love the more intense and extreme side of horror, give the Sick B*stards audiobook a try. You will not be disappointed.
