Blind Eye by William Malmborg : Horror Fiction review

Let me start by saying that William Malmborg’s Blind Eye is not technically a horror novel. It’s more of a thriller with plenty of horror bits thrown in for good measure.

When I heard this author was straying away from his horror roots, I was a little concerned. Authors don’t always make successful jumps into other genres, and I was already completely in love with his horror books. For those unfamiliar with his work, William Malmborg is the author of books such as Jimmy and Text Message. If you haven’t checked out his books, do so now. Right now!

Right, back to the review. In Blind Eye, Allen Miller is discharged from the military when he develops  a disease that prevents him from serving.  The 30-year-old ex-soldier moves into his mom’s basement and begins the next chapter of his life by taking classes at a local college. Unexpectedly, his old friend Stacy contacts him and suggests they hang out. Allen is glad to reconnect and heads over to Stacy’s place where he discovers she is a writer and she’s working on a story about a local real estate company that is used as a front for a prostitution ring. Stacy knows that if she can blow the scheme wide open, she will become a world-famous writer and actually be able to pay her bills for a change.

Allen helps Stacy with her investigation and it isn’t long before they find out their attention is unwanted. Someone will go to a lot of trouble to keep Allen and Stacy out of their business, but of course, this only makes them more determined to discover the truth.

Blind Eye is well written with an intense, solid plot, well-developed characters and even a little humour thrown in along the way. There are plot twists that will keep you guessing and scenes that will make you cringe. Malmborg doesn’t hold back when it comes to describing the horrors that go on in the world of prostitution, but despite being about the sex industry, he doesn’t have to resort to throwing sex scenes into every scene to capture and hold your attention.

The best part of Blind Eye is its characters. Malmborg is a pro when it comes to character development and I found myself really looking forward to seeing what would happen with each character, even those who had less than good intentions. Blind Eye is Malmborg’s best book to date and is the kind of edgy thriller with a touch of horror I have been looking for. I can’t wait until the sequel comes out.

He survived two wars and the onset of a horrific disease, only to find his life threatened back at home!

Alan Miller is adrift. At thirty years old, he is living in the basement at his mother’s house, jobless, taking classes at a local community college, his promising military career cut short by the sudden onset of an autoimmune disease that often leaves him racked with pain and stuck in the bathroom. And then one morning an email arrives that changes everything, one that he initially believes to be spam and nearly deletes.
