 A Life to Waste tells the story of Dave, a person who lost all purpose and meaning in his life. He’d spend his days eating and drinking, playing video games and watching horror flicks. He lived with his elderly mother, a mother he abused. One day, Dave’s world comes crashing down around him when one of his neighbors turns up missing. Her flat is covered in blood and the police soon knock on Dave’s door, asking if he heard or saw anything. Determined to find out what happened to the woman, Dave begins an investigation of his own, which leads to a horrifying discovery. Let me start by saying that I like the idea of this book. People go missing and a loser has a chance at redemption if he can find who or what is committing these kidnappings. That said, the idea was far better than the execution. Lennon had fun writing this book; that shows on each page. However, when there are repeated mistakes on every page, mistakes like run-on sentences, too many commas, most of which weren’t in the right places, missing capital letters, etc., it takes the joy out of reading any story. I spent the last half of the book counting how many mistakes I could find on each page, instead of paying attention to the actual story. Besides the obvious errors, there were several unanswered questions. What did the blood mean in the victim’s homes? Where did the “creature” come from? How did it/he choose victims? That plus a few “boo-boos” meant the end of the book wasn’t as exciting as it could have been. In my humble opinion, this wasn’t a very good book. However, I am a writer and editor (non-fiction) and I know how hard writing fiction can be. With the help of a good editor and with parts of the story rewritten, I think A Life to Waste has the potential of being a winner somewhere down the road. REVIEWED BY DAWN ANGRY PUPPY
