HORROR NOVEL REVIEW - DON'T READ BY MATT SHAW

Whenever I dive into one of Matt Shaw’s black cover books, I mentally prepare myself, and actually look forward to the disturbing, unsettling, and foreboding contents I will no doubt find within its covers. When Matt began talking about writing his most disgusting book to date, in all honestly, I had my doubts. All of his black cover books are cringe-worthy, nightmare-inducing tales, so how could it possibly get any worse? Don’t Read demonstrated just how much worse it could get.

Without giving too much away, let me just say that I read half of this book with my hands over my eyes. (You have no idea how difficult it is to read that way.) As soon as the tension started fading and I began to relax, Shaw upped the ante and brought the suspense and gruesome scenes back tenfold. I squirmed in my seat, gasped, and said some swear words I’m not particularly proud of – all during the first two chapters.

Don’t Read is about a man named Chris, who is so disheartened with the state of the horror industry, he decides to write his own horror novel. Unfortunately, for those who cross his path, Chris believes in doing real-life research for his book. At first, you can’t help but to like Chris. He is very polite and has a great sense of humour. It doesn’t take long for all that to change and although you might love Chris one minute, the next you hope a horrible fate befalls him.

If you take nothing else away from this review, please understand that this is EXTREME horror at its best. It is completely disgusting and filled with tension like no other book I’ve ever read – or at least – like no other book I can remember.  Matt Shaw set out to create the most disturbing book he has ever written, and he succeeded with Don’t Read. This book is not for the faint of heart and if you are easily disgusted, disturbed, or offended, this is NOT the book for you. That said, if you love gore, pain, torture and agony, you’ll love Don’t Read as much as I did.
