For the night is dark : kevin lucia

Today’s victim is Kevin Lucia.  Kevin is a Contributing Editor for Shroud Magazine, and a blogger for The Midnight Diner. His short fiction has appeared in several anthologies. He’s currently finishing his Creative Writing Masters Degree at Binghamton University, he teaches high school English and lives in Castle Creek, New York with his wife and children. He is the author of Hiram Grange& The Chosen One, Book Four of The Hiram Grange Chronicles.

Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

There's not much to tell. I teach high school English in Binghamton, New York, have been married to a wonderfully supportive wife for ten years, have two beautiful children, and I read like other people breath.  That's about it. I do love the outdoors, quirky knick-knack shops, garage sales, and model trains.

Do you prefer the term  Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

Don't suppose it much matters, really. Stories come, and I write.  I'm fine with the 'Horror' label, though. Ten years ago I wasn't sure, but I've come to realize it's such a broad genre, and that works for me.

Who are some of your favourite authors?

The big three, of course: Stephen King, Peter Straub, Dean Koontz. But also: the late Charles Grant, T. M. Wright, Norman Partridge, Ray Bradbury, Ramsey Campbell, F. Paul Wilson, Ron Malfi, Rio Youers, Norman Prentiss and Robert McCammon –  whose novel “Boy's Life” has become my favourite of all time.

Can you tell us anything about your story in the anthology?

You should see my love model trains pretty clearly...

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when someone says South African horror?

The magazine “Something Wicked”, which I've yet to land a story in. Someday...

Why did you decide to submit a story to this anthology?

The title and it's topic speaks to me. I've had some invitations for the past year or so – for vampire anthologies, zombie anthologies, monster anthologies – and those things just weren't what I wanted to write. The tone of this anthology was much broader, which I like.

And other than yourself who would you like to see open and close the anthology?

No preferences, really.

Could you recommend one of your own stories to the readers?

Of course my Hiram Grange novella, Hiram Grange and the Chosen One, but something I'm really proud of – a very personal story, a serial novella – will début in September over at Lamplight: a Horror Quarterly.  Will be available in a variety of formats, and at the end of the year, everything will be published in a trade paperback. Best of both worlds.
The Dark is coming! Call your friends over. You don't want to go through this alone. You will be taken back into the past, down to the depths of the ocean and across the borderline between our world and the next. You will see snapshots from the lives of small children, old-time cockney gangsters and aimless stoners. You will journey into the darkest house on the darkest street, wander hospital basements and take a flight in the comfort of first class. You will meet Mr Stix. This tome includes stories by some of the best horror writers around: G. N. Braun, Carole Johnstone, Armand Rosamilia, Daniel I. Russell, Scott Nicholson, Gary McMahon, Joe Mynhardt, Kevin Lucia, Tracie McBride, Stephen Bacon, Benedict J. Jones, Blaze McRob, John Claude Smith, Tonia Brown, Mark West, Robert W. Walker, Jeremy C. Shipp, Jasper Bark, William Meikle and Ray Cluley. Are you scared of the dark? You will be.
