FOR THE NIGHT IS DARK TONIA BROWN

26/4/2013
Picture
Today’s victim is Tonia Brown.  Tonia Brown is an author with a penchant for Victorian dead things. She has been writing since 2007, and has several novels as well as short stories published in a variety of markets. She lives in NC with her husband of many years. She likes coffee and fudgesicles, though not always together.

Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

I am a southern author with a penchant for Victorian dead things. I live in the hills of North Carolina with my genius husband and an ever fluctuating number of cats. When I am not writing, I raise unicorns, and fight crime with my husband under the code names Dr. Weird and his sexy side kick Butternut.

Do you prefer the term  Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

I am good with all three.  Or maybe horreird darktion? Or weirak fictorror?

Who are some of your favourite authors?

Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Terry Pratchett, Tom Robbins.

Can you tell us anything about your story in the anthology?

I’m planning on bringing a bit of the old steampunk into the mix. Ancient horrors running amok in a steam driven Victorian universe? Yes please!

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when someone says South African horror?

Oh my, I don’t really know. I want to say the Ford brother’s “The Dead” but I don’t think that was exclusively South African. Sorry, I got nothin’.

Why did you decide to submit a story to this anthology?

I liked the sound of it.

And other than yourself who would you like to see open and close the anthology?

Scott Nicholson for an opener or closer. Here is a man who truly writes for the sheer love of it. He lives by the philosophy of the right story for the right reader, as long as one person is touched then you did your job. I can dig it.

Could you recommend one of your own stories to the readers?

Several years ago I wrote a depressingly beautiful little ditty entitled “Pins and Needles, Silk and Sawdust.” It explores the    doubts a mortician has concerning fatherhood, which he discusses with a couple of stiffs all to a Wizard of Oz theme. It took some time to find the right outlet for it, but the lovely folks at Red Penny Papers snapped it right up. You can find it there at

Thanks to the brilliant talent of Chris Barnes from Dynamic Ram Audio Productions, you can enjoy an audio reading of the story on youtube. Enjoy!
