For The Night Is Dark Armand Rosamilia

2/4/2013
Picture
Armand Rosamilia is a New Jersey boy currently living in sunny Florida, where he writes when he's not watching zombie movies, the Boston Red Sox and listening to Heavy Metal music...

Besides the "Miami Spy Games" zombie spy thriller series, he has the "Keyport Cthulhu" horror series, several horror novellas and shorts to date, as well as the "Dying Days" series:

Highway To Hell... Darlene Bobich: Zombie Killer... Dying Days... Dying Days 2... Still Dying: Select Scenes From Dying Days... Dying Days: The Siege of European Village... and many more coming in 2013.

He is also an editor for Rymfire Books, helping with several horror anthologies, including "Vermin" and the "State of Horror" series, as well as the creator and energy behind Carnifex Metal Books, putting out the "Metal Queens Monthly" series of non-fiction books about females into Metal...

Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

I'd rather not. That seems like a lot of work. OK, fine… I'm a horror author (seriously?!), a Jersey boy that is currently living in sunny Florida. I am a huge Heavy Metal and zombie fan, I like to pimp myself online to the point of annoyance, and I like banana bread beer. There's really nothing else to me.

Do you prefer the term  Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

I've always been comfortable with simply Horror. But I get the Weird or Dark Fiction terms, I just think of them as subgenres of Horror Fiction myself. But I'm an old man, what do I know?

Who are some of your favourite authors?

I grew up on a healthy (unhealthy?) diet of Dean Koontz, RE Howard and H.P. Lovecraft. My favourites today are Bryan Hall, Brian Keene, John Everson, Douglas Clegg, Tonia Brown… I could list dozens and still not scratch the surface. I love finding new horror authors all the time, and love people suggesting them to me.

Can you tell us anything about your story in the anthology?

"The River" is based on the Bruce Springsteen song… alright, that isn't true. But I do like the song (I'm a Jersey boy, after all)… the idea came about when I was standing near a bridge killing some time until I had to meet some friends, and I saw a manatee in the water. My imagination is always running wild, and I thought it looked like a dead body. That was all I needed. The same night I got home after midnight and began writing the opening part to it, and it was done in a couple of days. It was one of those tales that almost wrote itself, and the finished story is pretty close to the first draft. I had to change a couple of ideas once some beta readers read it, but it is one I'm quite proud of.

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when someone says South African horror?

The "Sun City" song from the mid-80's by Steven Van Zandt and his friends. No idea why. I've never been but it would be on the bucket list for places to visit. I would hope the horror is worth the trip.

Why did you decide to submit a story to this anthology?

I like Joe Mynhardt quite a bit. He is good people, even though I never met him in person. Besides, the idea sounded cool, and I had this story waiting to be submitted somewhere, so it worked out perfectly. Once I saw the list of other accepted authors I was quite happy, because the name's I've read previously I love, and I'm interested in finding a few new authors to read. I think I love being in anthologies more for the new authors I get to read than anything else.

And other than yourself who would you like to see open and close the anthology?

That is very tough, because I've actually read and enjoyed most of the authors involved. If I had to point out one of them, I think Scott Nicholson, only because I've read more of his work than anyone else. But I'm just happy to be able to read all these stories.

Could you recommend one of your own stories to the readers?

I would love to recommend all of them (60+ releases so far!) but the one series that might be closest to this story is my Keyport Cthulhu tales, since they are also creepy and more traditional horror. Why not begin with the first in the (eventual) five-part series, Ancient?
