HORROR AUTHOR INTERVIEW : FIVE MINUTES WITH GN BRAUN

25/11/2013
Picture
G.N. Braun is an Australian writer raised in Melbourne’s gritty Western Suburbs.

He is a trained nurse, and holds a Cert. IV in Professional Writing and Editing, as well as a Dip. Arts (Professional Writing and Editing).

At graduation, Braun was awarded ‘Vocational Student of the Year’ and ’2012 Student of the Year’ by his college.

He writes fiction across various genres, and is the author of numerous short stories. He is the past president of the Australian Horror Writers Association (2011-2013), as well as the past director of the Australian Shadows Awards.  He is an editor and columnist for UK site This is Horror, and the guest editor for Midnight Echo #9.

His memoir, Hammered, was released in early 2012 by Legumeman Books and has been extensively reviewed.

He is the owner of Cohesion Editing and Proofreading, and has now opened a publishing house, Cohesion Press.

Hammered by G.N. BRAUN
HAMMERED BY G.N. BRAUN
Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

I’m a trained nurse, but nowadays work for myself as an editor now. I also run a small press publishing house.

Do you prefer the term Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

All three. Why limit ourselves to one label?

Who are some of your favourite authors?

William Burroughs, Joe Lansdale, Robert McCammon, Joe Hill, Jack Ketchum, Jonathan Maberry, Greig Beck, Weston Ochse, Joseph Nassise, and James A Moore, to name a few.

What are you reading now?

Apart from reading submissions for a major anthology my press has coming out next year, I’m reading King of Plagues by Jonathan Maberry (for the second time).

How would you describe your writing style?

I write in a few different ways. For realist writing, I use a minimalist, sparse writing style. At other times I use a more literary, image-filled style, and I can also throw out the odd story or two using a pulp-style voice.

Describe a typical day spent writing. Do you have any unusual writing habits?

Music on the PC, Internet open for research (on one screen) and the word document on the other screen. I close the door and put up the Do Not Disturb sign and hunker down.

What’s your favourite food?

Bacon, eggs, and grilled onion for breakfast, and kebab any other time of the day.

What’s your favourite album?

At the moment, it would have to be Magical Ring by Clannad (for writing) and Scripted by Icon for Hire for non-writing.

What’s the most important lesson you have learned about writing?

Just write. Write the first draft as well as you can, but get it down. Worry about the rest later. And read. Read a lot. Read all you can, and read outside your genre.

Fame and fortune, or respect?

Respect, for sure. Although income from sales is great.

What piece of your own work are you most proud of?

Still Hammered: Memoir of an Addict. It’s my life story of addiction and redemption, and is still getting great reviews.

Can you tell us about your last book, and can you tell us about what you are working on next?

Hammered was my last full-length book. I have had a number of shorts and mids released lately, and the next novel I’m working on is called Grey Man, and combines military Special Forces stuff with gritty crime stuff. I love both genres, and feel the need to write a cross-over.
