HORROR AUTHOR INTERVIEW : SERGIO PEREIRA

11/1/2014
Horror Author Interview Sergio Pereira
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sergio is an eccentric, wannabe writer, who somehow managed to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies and Psychology. In spite of his academic endeavors, he secretly aspires to be the Wizard of Oz, or Batman (actually, mostly Batman). Sadly, none of these dreams have come true for him yet. Recently, he self-published a horror novella titled Don't Steal from the Devil, which somehow found its way into the Top 100 Horror section of Amazon UK, and Death Throes Webzine showcased his gruesome short story The Crucifix Killings. During the day, he works as a freelance journalist and copywriter for the music industry. His website is: www.sergiopereira.co.za.

Horror author interview
Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

I’m a 28 year old journalist and copywriter from Johannesburg, South Africa. When I’m not trying to cheat the system of Candy Crush, or watching old episodes of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on YouTube, I write horror and horror comedy stories.

Do you prefer the term Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

Horror. Weird fiction just sounds like it’s some kinky adventure about vampires, Justin Bieber, and maple syrup. Dark fiction sounds rather shadowy.

Who are some of your favourite authors?

In no particular order of relevance: Roald Dahl, Neil Gaiman, David Moody, Derek Landy, Michael Crichton... I probably missed a few more, so this list will change on a daily basis.

What are you reading now?

Right now, I’m sinking my teeth into David Moody’s Autumn series. It’s all about the zombie apocalypse, so it’s a delightful bedtime read.

How would you describe your writing style?

Well, an editor of a publishing company described it as “exotic.” Maybe, it was his polite way of saying that it was crap.

Describe a typical day spent writing. Do you have any unusual writing habits?

Type a paragraph. Go outside and play with the dogs. Procrastinate. Eat. Write another three paragraphs. Question what I’m doing with my life. Write some more. Check Facebook for a laugh. Write some more. Listen to Wednesday 13 and wonder what it would be like to be a rock star. Write some more. Eat. Go to bed. Lie awake for hours and wonder why I didn’t write more.

What’s your favourite food?

At the moment, I’m addicted to butternut anything.

What’s your favourite album?

Wednesday 13’s Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying, and the Undead. An underrated horror punk masterpiece from 2005.

What’s the most important lesson you have learned about writing?

That everyone will give you different advice, so rather nod your head and smile.

.Fame and fortune, or respect?

Is it wrong to want it all?

What piece of your own work are you most proud of?

A children’s horror comedy series. It is the most accurate description of who I am: an eternal child who loves horror and comedy.

Can you tell us about your last book, and can you tell us about what you are working on next?

My last work was a horror novella titled Don’t Steal from the Devil. It’s a possession-themed story with a twist; essentially, what would happen if two burglars broke into a home that’s possessed by a demon? That’s two horrors to contend with, and you aren’t sure what you despise more. Next up, I’ll be continuing my children’s horror comedy series with book number three. There’s no title or actual storyline yet, but I hope that the upcoming festive season will give me some inspiration. If not, I’ll probably jump right into the Don’t Steal from the Devil sequel.

In the middle of the night, two intruders enter the home of a broken family. Awaiting them is a violent, demonic entity that is hell-bent on dishing out a harsh lesson about vengeance, treachery, immorality, and survival...

Harold and Jane Parker are the epitome of mundane. They work boring jobs, watch the same old boring television shows, and go away to the same holiday destination every year. However, their dull lives receive a much needed boost of excitement when they believe they've uncovered a murder.

"The Nosey Parkers" is a short story.

Some of these answers made me laugh out loud. Glad to see an author showing his personality, rather than being an arrogant or PC ponce.

I bought a copy from Amazon. Holy crap! It's awesome. It's like a B-movie short story.
