HORROR AUTHOR INTERVIEW : SIMON GOODWIN

4/5/2014
horror websiteThe Forgotten Graveyard
Okay, what to say? Let's start with the boring details before we get to the juicy bits! I am Simon Goodwin
I am 46 years old and have been writing since I was at school, but this is my first foray into publishing of any description (I have sent manuscripts to publishers and Agents only to receive the standard 'Thanks but no thank' reply, or more likely no reply at all). I am what is commonly known as a geek. I love Science Fiction (Especially Star Wars- I can quote all 6 films word for word), the supernatural, paranormal, fantasy etc etc. I love anything remotely in the genre. I am married (maybe I should've put that first- might still do if the wife sees this), to a beautiful woman(there, that's a few brownie points), and am a carer for my father. My wife and I have 5 dogs, four cats, two budgies, goldfish(indoor and out) and a tortoise called Yoda (see Geek!), and a bearded dragon called Loki My dream is to walk into a bookshop (or look on Amazon of course) and see my book for sale(Amazon I Love You). I have worked in numerous fields, including in a cinema, in a Disney Store and in numerous warehouses.
So that's me. If you like what you read then let me know, if you don't let me know. If you want to chat, let me know. I'm here to stay now.....

Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

I am 46 years old, married with a house full of animals. I am only ever so slightly weird.

I love fantasy, horror, sci-fi, in fact I am for all intent and purpose, a Geek.

Do you prefer the term Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

Dark Fiction

Who are some of your favourite authors?

Terry Brooks, Jonathan Maberry, Thomas Emson, James Herbert

What is your all-time favourite horror novel, and film?

Horror novel? Swan Song by Robert McCammon, unfavourably compared to Stephen King’s the Stand, it is a brilliant Post Apocalyptic epic. Film? Alien. Tense, atmospheric (pun intended) and gory.

If you could erase one horror cliché what would be your choice?

Don’t kill the dog

Which fictional character would be you perfect neighbour, and who would be your nightmare neighbour?

Perfect Neighbour?  Yoda

Worst neighbour? Anyone from the House of Stark (GOT)

What do you think of the current state of the genre?

Getting there, at least with the current crop of TV genre shows like the Walking Dead and GOT, the genre is not being sneered over so much any more

What was the last great book you read, and what was the last book that disappointed you?

Vampire World by Brian Lumley recently read it. Again. A trilogy that is brilliant

Dracula by Stoker. Gotta say, it’s like reading Yoda writing Shakespeare

How would you describe your writing style?

Steady, sarcastic and strangely therapeutic

Are there any reviews of your work, positive or negative that have stayed with you?

Not so far

What’s your favourite food?

A good fry up

Who would be on the soundtrack to your life story?

Spread your Wings by Queen

What’s the most important lesson you have learned about writing?

Don’t let the characters run off

What aspects of writing to do you find the most difficult?

Stopping the characters running off

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?

Definitely more critical of my writing. And a lot more descriptive in all manner of ways

What tools do you feel are must-haves for writers?

A good sense of humour. And a laptop

What is the best piece of advice you ever received from another author?

Write, write and write. And read.

Who is your favourite character from your book and why?

Hmmmm, hard one that. Out of Child of Woe, Dark Hunter, it would have to be Rennigar, mainly because he is such a complex character to write about. Neither good or evil, a man torn between his need and his duty

How about your least favourite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

None so far

Fame, fortune, or respect?

Respect

What piece of your own work are you most proud of?

Child of Woe, Dark Hunter

And are there any that you would like to forget about?

Nope, at least none that I can remember.....

For those who haven’t read any of you books, what book of yours do you think best represents your work and why?

Again Child of Woe, Dark Hunter, although Forgotten Graveyard does a pretty good job as well

Can you tell us about your last book, and can you tell us about what you are working on next?

Forgotten Graveyard came about as a title because there is such a place near us, a graveyard that has been forgotten, there is a child’s grave there, she was only five when she died and that was in the early 1900’s. As for the book itself, it is about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and their return to do battle with the Oathtakers of the Seven deadly Sins. It is an ongoing series that will deal with a new world and new dangers.

What's the one question you wish you would get asked but never do?

Can I have your autograph.
