Horror Interview: 5 Minutes With Matt Drabble

12/9/2013
Picture
Born in Bath, England in 1974, a self-professed "funny onion", equal parts sport loving jock and comic book geek.

From an early age reading so many works of varied authors he took the somewhat foolhardy decision to attempt his own novels. He has currently completed four books, Rapture Falls, Vengeance Has Fangs Gated, Asylum and my newest novel Abra-Cadaver - all of which are available in ebook format for download on Amazon.

Perhaps one day he hopes he will be able to list his publishing achievements and literary awards but for now he simply hopes to have produced an interesting piece of work that entertains with a modicum of intelligence.

He has  always been an avid fan of the Horror/Supernatural genres and finds that many great works in this field are automatically dismissed due to their subject matter.

Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?

My name is Matt Drabble. I am a 39 year Brit who has been writing and self-publishing now for a little over a year. I have 3 novels available on Amazon and 2013 has been a good year so far as I have been able to write full time and make small living on eBook sales.

Do you prefer the term Horror, Weird Fiction or Dark Fiction?

I like Dark Fiction as some of my work does stray into more dark thriller territory than straight up horror.

Who are some of your favourite authors?

I am a massive Stephen King fan not just as a horror writer, but as a writer period. I also enjoy writers like Michael Slade, Scott Smith, Frank Miller, James Herbert, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman

What are you reading now?

I am actually between books at the minute. I am editing/proofing a completed first draft of mine as well as writing two others at the same time, there are just never enough hours in the day!

How would you describe your writing style?

I would like to think that I am very character led when I write. I like to set a scene and flesh out an environment. There’s no point in me killing a character if you haven’t come to care about him. I’d like to think that I have poetic turn of phrase and a good sense of pace.

Describe a typical day spent writing. Do you have any unusual writing habits?

I have always treated writing like any other job. I walk the dog first thing and clock in around 9.30. I always set myself a minimum word count of 3000 a day and I make sure that I stick to it.

What’s your favourite food?

I do love a curry and would plump for a Korma.

What’s your favourite album?

I am a big rock fan and would have to pick something like Metallica’s black album.

What’s the most important lesson you have learned about writing?

Proof, proof and then proof again and when you’re finally happy with the finished book, proof it again.

Fame and fortune, or respect?

I know that most people would plump for respect, but I can’t pay my mortgage with respect. I would go for fortune which would allow me the time and space to work on a project that hopefully would bring the respect that of course I crave as much as any writer.

What piece of your own work are you most proud of?

I will always have a soft spot for “Gated” as it really got the ball rolling for me, but I think that “Asylum – 13 Tales of Terror” is probably the thing I’m most proud of as I had never tried to write short stories before and the book has been very well received and has sold really well.

Can you tell us about your last book, and can you tell us about what you are working on next?

“Abra-Cadaver” is a horror/slasher/murder mystery novel. Tommy, Dixon, McEwen, PJ, and Alison were always a close knit group until Tommy's 12th birthday party. Tragedy strikes when a magic trick goes horribly wrong and a woman lays dead.

A local magician Albert Trotter is railroaded during a rigged trial and locked away. Forever protesting his innocence and after a vicious assault in prison, he is eventually sent to a mental institution in a catatonic state.

Now Tommy is 36 and heading home for the first time in over two decades, but he's not alone. Someone is slaughtering the residents of Denver Mills with magic trick themed murders and holding those involved with the Trotter trial in a steely grip of fear.

Tommy will have to find the strength to bring his old friends together as secrets and lies are exposed throughout the small town of Denver Mills.

Something evil is coming home, and they're bringing a whole new bag of tricks.

I am currently editing a supernatural thriller called “The Montague Portrait” which is a story about an insurance investigator and the search for a cursed painting. I am also writing a new short horror story collection called “Campfire Tales”
