Splatterpunk is a sub-genre of horror fiction that came to light during the 1980s. It was, and perhaps still is a movement against the more traditional stylings of horror fiction. I am talking about the ghost stories, the quiet creeping horror that was a staple of the genre, particularly throughout the 80s. Splatterpunk is a no holds barred approach to writing horror. It’s one that isn’t afraid to go that little bit further, to take a chance, to push the readers imagination, and sometimes to push the readers dinner back out of their stomachs. Names like John Skipp, Craig Spector, David J. Schow, Edward Lee, and Jack Ketchum…..these are just a selection of some of the great writers operating within the Splatterpunk genre. Where am I going with this? Well, for this Press-Ups feature I decided to have a chat with Jack Bantry. Jack is a postman by day, avid reader and horror fan by night. Jack is a lover of horror and particularly the Splatterpunk genre. So much so that Jack decided to start his own magazine called Splatterpunk! The first issue came out in 2012 and featured fiction from Dave Benton & W.D. Gagliani, Jeff Strand (a regular contributor to the zine), Tim Curran and a short from Bantry himself. Book reviews and interviews with Jack Ketchum, Wrath James White & Andre Duza and a great little piece by Wayne Simmons. The magazine has gone from strength to strength. Last year saw the release of Splatterpunk #7. Jeff Strand was again involved along with Adam Cesare, Kristopher Rufty and Garrett Cook! I am telling you now, this magazine is superb. Most issues are sold out (lucky I have them all). I sat down with Jack and had a chin wag about the future for Splatterpunk, horror fiction and news of an upcoming anthology. Enjoy... Director Jeremy Saulnier has followed up 2013’s hugely acclaimed revenge thriller Blue Ruin with Green Room, a tense, gruesome chiller starring Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots, about a punk band who find themselves at the mercy of a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads led by Patrick Stewart.

Horror's finest married couple talks to ginger nuts of horror about working together on their excellent horror films before dawn and bait
I was honoured to interview Dominic brunt and his wife Joanne Mitchell at the tail end of last year. After watching their powerful and disturbing film Bait I just had to speak to them about the film and the pressures of working together on such a brutal film. Read on for an enlightening interview with two genuine rising stars of the horror genre......
In a new monthly feature here on The Ginger Nuts of Horror, I get to know some fantastic authors by speaking to them in an informal, conversational setting, over the phone. There are no pre-written questions and the authors don't have time to make up their answers, so what they say is as honest and forthcoming as possible. My hope is that readers will be able to see through the horrific stories and deranged characters, and get to know their favourite authors in a way never before possible. I hope you enjoy this month's Up Close and Personal with April's author, David Owain Hughes. David Owain Hughes is the author of fantastic extreme horror stories such as Wind-Up Toy and White Walls and Straightjackets, and features in the Number 1 best-selling anthology, Easter Eggs and Bunny Boilers. After this conversation, I am more convinced than ever that he needs psychiatric help. PRESS UPS: SINISTER GRIN PRESS
8/4/2016
In this latest feature I travelled to the southern U.S., Austin, Texas, to be exact. This is where I sought out the guys at Sinister Grin Press. Sinister Grin Press is a publishing house formed inside the dark minds of co- founders Travis Tarpley and Shane McKenzie. The press is partnered with Matt Worthington and Tristan Thorne. I am a huge fan of these guys. They have released some truly memorable limited edition hardbacks by Adam Cesare, Charlee Jacob, Lee Thomas, Kristopher Rufty and Wrath James White. But, that’s not all! They have released a number of EBooks and paperbacks from the above mentioned and others including the brilliant ‘Jackpot’ – a novel about a serial killer who strikes it big by winning the lottery! This particular book brought together Adam Cesare, Kristopher Rufty, David Bernstein and Shane McKenzie in a tale filled with gruesome acts of depravity and coated in dark humour. It was heaps of fun to read and grossed me out on several occasions too. What follows is a series of questions I put to the guys about their publishing adventures and some insight into their forthcoming projects. Enjoy! CAMERON TROST INTERVIEW: THE AUTHOR
